Natural Pools
& Waterfalls
in Eastern Tuscany
Crystal-clear rivers, hidden cascades and wild swimming spots — all within reach of Il Vigno. The hills around Caprese Michelangelo are carved by streams and spring-fed pools that most visitors never find.
On Your Doorstep
The Singerna River &
pools below Il Vigno.
The hills surrounding Il Vigno are carved by numerous waterways that converge in the Singerna torrent — a spring-fed stream that flows through the valley just below the farm. In summer, the Singerna forms natural bathing pools between rocks and shaded banks, and it's possible to swim, sit and picnic in complete peace. Follow the valley path from the farm gate downhill for around 20–30 minutes to reach the clearest pools.
The water is cold and clean — fed by mountain springs rather than agricultural runoff — and the surrounding forest provides deep shade during the heat of the day. These spots are known to locals but rarely visited by outsiders. Ask us at the farmhouse for the best access point and current conditions before you go.
Lower Singerna Pools
Easy · 20–30 min walk · Suitable for all
Spring-fed natural pools between rock formations, shaded by chestnut and oak. Best visited in the morning before temperatures peak. The walk from the farm is gentle and follows a farm track before descending into the valley. Ask us for directions at the farmhouse.
Upper Valley Cascades
Moderate · 1–1.5 hr walk · Rocky terrain
Continue upstream from the lower pools and the valley narrows into a wooded gorge with small cascades and deeper plunge pools. Sturdy footwear is recommended. The route connects with forest trails towards the Catenaia ridge at higher elevation.
Within an Hour
Wild swimming spots
in the wider area.
Eastern Tuscany and the Casentino National Park hide some of the most spectacular natural swimming in Italy — most of it free, uncrowded, and genuinely wild. These spots are all reachable from Il Vigno in under an hour by car.
Acquacheta Waterfall
Moderate · ~50 min drive · 3–3.5 hr hike return
One of the most dramatic waterfalls in the northern Apennines — a cascade of over 70 metres set deep in the Casentino National Park, made famous by Dante Alighieri who described it in the 16th canto of the Divine Comedy. The trail from San Benedetto in Alpe is well-marked (CAI 409) and passes through beech and chestnut forest. Natural swimming pools form just below the falls and along the river — in summer, the main waterfall may reduce in flow but the swimming holes remain beautiful. Free entry.
Pietrapazza Valley Pools
Easy–Moderate · ~45 min drive · 30–60 min walk
Hidden in the valley of the Bidente torrent near the municipality of Bagno di Romagna, the Pietrapazza pools are carved into bare rock by centuries of river flow — natural ponds with small waterfalls, sunbathing ledges and rocks to dive from. One of the most beautiful and least-visited wild swimming spots in central Italy. Best visited on a weekday in early summer.
Lago di Montedoglio
Easy · ~25 min drive · Lake shore access
The large reservoir formed by the Tiber at Montedoglio is the closest open-water swimming to Il Vigno. Popular with locals for summer swimming, canoeing and fishing — the lake is well-stocked and open to shore access at several points. The water warms quickly in July and August. A more relaxed, social option than the mountain rivers.
Bidente River, Santa Sofia
Easy · ~55 min drive · Various access points
The Bidente river north of Santa Sofia is a destination for kayakers but also one of the finest river swimming areas in the region — wide, clear pools with rocky banks and beech forest overhead. The stretch near Bagno di Romagna is particularly beautiful, with several easy-access entry points and good depth for swimming. Best from June through September.
